A patio is an essential element in today’s Driveway. Concrete is the most popular patio material in the country. With many decorative finishes, concrete patios attract homeowners who want an outdoor surface with unlimited design potential. When compared to wood decks, pavers and natural stone, a concrete patio is also more durable and requires less maintenance.
Some simple guidelines can help you decide on the best paver for your new patio, deck or Driveway. A professional landscaper can offer valuable input and offer suggestions that will be cost effective, beautiful and functional. You will also be impressed with paver industry technology that offers extensive paver shapes, sizes, styles, colors and textures for every client’s taste and use.
Choosing the right patio pavers for your outdoor living area is key to setting the tone for your overall project. While we use the industry term patio pavers, we can use pavers of varying shapes, sizes, and colors to create a cohesive look with your outdoor kitchen area, inground pool deck, stairs, walkways, and driveway.
We use pavers from E.P. Henry, Techo-Bloc, and others. We can also use natural stone throughout, or as borders or accents. Today we’re discussing pavers, but if you opt for natural stone, the same principles apply.
Color, Shape, Pattern, and Texture
There are a number of things you need to consider when choosing the right patio pavers. These include color, shape, pattern, and texture.
Color may be the most important aspect of selecting the right patio pavers. This is because color is the first thing people will notice, including you. Choose colors that suit your personality and complement your home. The color of your home’s siding or brick may help dictate your choice.
While most pavers come in a wide variety of earth tones (think reds, oranges, yellows, tans, browns, greys, and black), the color variations and the finishing pieces (such as end caps, borders, and stairs) you choose must give a cohesive look.
You don’t want any part of your outdoor living space to look like it doesn’t belong, or was thrown in as an afterthought.
What shape you choose for your patio pavers is another area of preference. Square, rectangular, round, cobblestone, brick pavers, slabs, and randomly shaped pavers. You can use pavers from the same color family, but with different shapes for different outdoor living spaces.
This is an area where it can help to look at our portfolio, as well as search Google for images. You may also want to visit the various manufacturer websites and look at their images, which usually identify the specific paver line used.
By pattern, we mean both the pattern of the paver (some can look like wood, for instance) and the layout of the pavers. As far as the pattern of the paver goes, it all depends on the aesthetic you are going for.
Some popular patterns include:
- Running Bond
- Basket Weave
- Modular Patterns
Some patterns only work with rectangular pavers – for instance, the herringbone pattern.
Many pavers are manufactured to mimic the texture of natural stone or brick. This means you may have pavers that are very smooth, while others have a more rustic feel. The idea of texture is to make sure it doesn’t cause a trip hazard.
You might want pavers with a non-slip texture near your inground pool and opt for a smoother paver for borders, for example.
Don’t Get Overwhelmed
Don’t get overwhelmed by all of the choices. Ordering a few catalogs or saving your favorite images can help you narrow down your choices. If you’re the type of person who takes longer to make decisions, you might want to have some of your choices made/determined your preferences before you hire a patio builder. And good luck!
