Before starting work on your gravel driveway, make sure you are wearing appropriate safety protection throughout the entire process.

STEP 1: Excavation

Excavate to a depth of 150mm below the finished level for normal driveways and 180mm for driveways which will take heavy vehicles. Excavate any soft areas of sub-grade and fill these areas with compacted sub-base material. Treat the sub-grade with weed killer if needed.

A geo-membrane can be laid on top of the sub-grade to prevent the sub-base sinking into the sub-grade.

Build any edgings before the sub-base is laid to help stop the spread of sub-base and gravel.

STEP 2: Sub-Base

Lay and compress the sub-base with a roller or wacker plate to measure 100mm. For areas that will bear heavy vehicles, lay and compact the sub-base to measure 150mm.

For domestic drives the sub base should be granular sub-base material.

For commercial areas the sub base should be hardcore.

STEP 3: Gravel

Lay and compact top layer of gravel to a depth of 40mm. A variety of sizes and types of gravel can be used, depending on customer preference. Compact the gravel to help it settle.

STEP 4: Maintenance

Gravel can be topped up from time to time and treated with weed killer.
